The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation made a $3 million grant to the Collins Center for Public Policy in Florida in 2001, with $1.5 million designated for the purchase of real estate by an independent “land trust.” The land trust was established and purchased the property to benefit the Overtown community. In 2013, the land trust’s board of directors voted to transfer all of its properties, without consideration, to Urban Philanthropies, Inc., a newly established nonprofit. Urban subsequently sold the property and put the proceeds into an investment account.
