Community center not liable for thief’s joy ride

The Rhode Island Supreme Court has refused to impose liability upon a community center for injuries suffered by individuals in an accident caused by the driver of a van stolen from the center’s parking lot. The Court has found that the center had no duty to those injured. A 14-year-old boy apparently broke into the Nickerson Community Center in Providence, stole keys from a cabinet, and took the Center’s van for a joyride. He hit one car, then fled police and hit another car, and jumped a median to hit an oncoming car in the other lane. A woman in the oncoming car was killed and her two minor daughters were injured.
