Solicitor may sue for retaliatory discharge
When solicitor Tonzil Jones told his supervisor that he would no longer solicit contributions on the streets of Murfreesboro, TN, because a police officer had told him it was “illegal” and he “could be fined and/or go to jail,” he said he was discharged from his employment during the telephone conversation. A federal District Court in Tennessee has permitted him to sue his employer under the state’s Public Protection Act and the common law prohibition against retaliatory discharge.
