A hospital thrift shop manager who was fired after she developed carpal tunnel syndrome from her hands-on work of lifting, sorting, arranging, repairing and cleaning inventory has been permitted to pursue a claim against her foundation employer for retaliation, even though the court has dismissed her claim for “outrage” in the manner of her termination. The manager reported her difficulty in performing manual duties at least three times between 2001 and 2004. In 2004 when she was introduced to a new supervisor, she said the supervisor told her not to file “an L & I claim” because doing so would make her fellow employees pay for her medical costs and, thus, hurt the shop.
