An appellate court in Missouri has ruled that a nonprofit healthcare organization may not fire an at-will employee who missed time from work because she donated a kidney to her brother. The Court said the action was a wrongful termination against public policy. When the employee told the organization that she would need to be out of work for four weeks after her surgery, the employer initially approved her request. But three days before the scheduled surgery, it told her it could not hold her position and discharged her.
