Corporate stock is largest type of noncash gifts
Gifts of corporate stock to charities totaled more than $38.6 billion and comprised more than half of all noncash charitable gifts reported on individuals’ tax returns for 2018, the IRS has reported . The total reported value was down slightly from $39.2 billion reported in 2017, but the total number of all returns itemizing deductions was cut by nearly 65% because of the change in the tax law in 2017 according to a report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Because the standard deduction was significantly increased in 2018, the percentage of individual taxpayers itemizing their deductions dropped from about 24% in 2017 to about 8.5% in 2018.
