Property occupied by subsidiary not exempt
Real estate occupied solely by a wholly controlled subsidiary of a volunteer fire company is not exempt from real estate taxes in Pennsylvania, the state’s Commonwealth Court has held. State law permits exemption of property owned by a charitable organization that is partly occupied by the owner and partly occupied by another charitable organization. Even though the subsidiary operated a day care center that was classified as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the fire company had stipulated that it did not use any portion of the property for its own purposes.
