Court permits Tea Party class action against IRS

A federal District Court in Ohio has permitted a group of Tea Party and other conservative organizations to pursue a class action against the Internal Revenue Service for allegedly illegal scrutiny of their applications for tax exempt status. The groups first filed the suit in May, 2013 and an amended complaint in January 2014. They sued the IRS and a number of individual employees in both their individual and official capacities. They claimed violation of the Privacy Act, violation of the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution, and violation of the Tax Code provision protecting confidentiality of tax return information.
