Donors may recover gifts when new church isn’t built

The Supreme Court of Mississippi has reaffirmed that donors who asked for a refund of their gifts to rebuild a parish church have standing to sue for diversion of designated assets when the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi closed church. But, in fact, no donors actually received their money back in the litigation. The St. Paul Catholic Church was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Bishop merged the parish with another parish but planned to rebuild the St. Paul church and donations were solicited for that purpose.
